INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE

The module will explore the following:

  • Types of coaching and mentoring such as:
    • Developmental coaching
    • Performance coaching
    • Team coaching
  • Case studies and exemplars of coaching and mentoring applied
  • The benefits and limitations of internal and external coaching
  • The ethics around a range of coaching and mentoring situations

Assessment Details

The assignment is in two parts. The first part asks you to look how coaching and/or mentoring can improve organisational performance, and the second part relates to your impact as a coach or mentor on individuals or teams. Both parts are expected to have an academic underpinning, integrating theory and practice.

The assignment must include a clear structure with an abstract, a list of references and, where appropriate, appendices and diagrams. You must make appropriate use of journal articles and texts. References should follow the Harvard system –

Part 1:

Critically discuss ways in which coaching and/or mentoring could improve organisational performance, relating your ideas to relevant academic literature and, if appropriate, examples from your own experience. (3,000 words)

Part 2:

Critically reflect on your own impact as a coach/mentor on the performance of individuals or teams, discussing the effectiveness of the range of coaching/mentoring approaches or techniques you have used. Support your account with reference to relevant academic literature. (3,000 words)

To preserve confidentiality, please anonymise any organisation or organisations you discuss in the assignment, eg by calling them Company X, or Governmental Organisation Y, or International Organisation Z. Similarly, where you write about private individuals, call them manager A, or leader B.

N.B. The word count will include quotations but exclude footnotes, list of references, appendices, tables and graphs. Appendices will not count against the word limit but should not contain large amounts of text. (It will be expected that they will normally contain diagrams or tables or visual images). Appendices should not contain material that is essential to meeting the assignment brief. If you exceed the wordcount by more than 10%, you will be penalised.

General Assignment Expectations

  • Use the word count
  • Address all parts of the question
  • Follow the guidance
  • To gain a higher mark use more focused academic peer reviewed references, to enable deeper analysis
