QUESTION:

 

As a supervisor in the workplace you will be required to train staff about legislation, regulations, policies and procedures related to work health and safety (WHS).  Sometimes this might be in an informal setting, say at a toolbox meeting, or sometimes in a more formal setting, say in a staff training room.  In any case this is an important part of your job, and no matter the setting you need to give your full attention to such training. Lives may depend on it. Listed below are the steps required for this assessment.  You must research, plan and deliver a 5-minute talk to your work group.

 

TASK

 

 This task will be due in Week 5.  You need to submit a recording of your talk, and it should be recorded in front a group of at least 4 team members, who should be prepared to ask questions.  If you wish you can make arrangements to do your talk in the Collaborate online classroom, a Microsoft Teams meeting, a Zoom meeting or other meeting software in front of other class members.  You will need a minimum of 4 group members, and then submit the recording with your assessment below.  The Meeting software you choose will need to have the ability to record your meeting.

 

Once you have decided how you will present your training session: Identify a hazard relevant to an item in the list below to research and conduct a WHS talk about with your workgroup i.e. you are the supervisor advising your staff of the hazard and or issue. Types and use of fire extinguishers  Hazardous substances in the workplace and how to identify them What is a near miss Manual handling Getting to the root cause of a safety problem (The 5 ‘Whys’) PPE First aid requirements in the workplace The hierarchy of control and its application in your workplace A hazard of your own choice, checked with and approved by your lecturer Conduct research into the hazard.  You need to sound like an expert when delivering the information in your talk, so the more information you know, the more authoritative you will sound. Identify relevant legislation, regulations and organisational policies and procedures that apply to the hazard and its treatment.

 

Deliver a 5- minute presentation to your work group on the hazard, including: description of the hazard: identify specific examples or cases of the hazard use photos/printouts to explain the hazard causes of the hazard effects of the hazard control methods for the hazard (using the hierarchy of control) organisational policies and procedures relating to the hazard,

 

Including: OHS policy, addressing hazard identification risk management policy risk management procedure the importance of consultation in identifying and treating hazards in the workplace an explanation of the relevant provisions of the legislation (such as work health safety legislation), regulations or codes of practice that may apply to the hazard note when you checked these and when you plan to next check them in order to keep up-to-date with changes in legislation how you plan to follow up to consult again on hazard and treatment a description of where workgroup members can access information about the hazard.
