Sam Fallow Case Study
This morning Sam 18 left his home with his younger sister Emily who is 16. He has packed two suitcases with their belongings and taken what money he could find to support them approx. $60. They both have been experiencing domestic violence at the hands of their father who became unemployed last year and now drinks very heavily on a daily basis. Asa result, Sam and his sister get beaten and abused regularly. Sam has visible bruising around the eyes and a hand mark on his neck. He states that he worried about his sister’s safety as his father has been making lewd advances towards her recently.
Sam experiences bipolar disorder as a result of the trauma he has been subjected to over the years, his sister is starting to show similar symptoms. Bipolar disorder seems to be most closely linked to family history. Stress and conflict can trigger episodes for people with this condition and it’s not uncommon for bipolar disorder to be misdiagnosed as depression, alcohol or drug abuse, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or schizophrenia.
He states that he experiences
Mood: mood swings, sadness, elevated mood, anger, anxiety, apathy, apprehension, euphoria, general discontent, guilt, hopelessness, loss of interest, or loss of interest or pleasure in activities

Sam uses alcohol quite erratically when he is feeling unwell. Alcohol is known to intensify bipolar disorder due to its sedating effects. It acts similarly to some medications, risking feelings of depression with each swig of alcohol. Alcohol also greatly increases the severity of mania, which many who suffer from bipolar find extremely pleasurable. Sam would like to find long term accommodation for him and his sister, he has the potential to work part time but has been unable to go to work for fear that his sister will get hurt. Sam is completing his chef diploma at tale but has fallen behind as a result of all the issues at home and says that if he gets, his qualification then his part time job will become a fulltime job.
Sam’s mum died many years ago and so the two siblings have little resources with family. Sam needs to get access to documentation for him and his sister so that they have ID and can get further support with Centrelink and housing services.
