Class activity:  Feedback

Scenario

Bill Bonds has reported to you that George has complained he has so much work to complete he will have to work overtime to progress in the project being undertaken for a client. This is the second time an employee has been overloaded with work to the extent where overtime is required. When work is delegated initially, the tasks for each member of the team are always equal. This issue needs to be resolved as soon as possible and a process put in place so that this issue can be avoided or dealt with promptly in the future.

Tasks

List the responsibilities of George’s supervisor and the reasons why you think this issue has arisen (you make as many assumptions as needed, for example George is a slow worker; or Bill may not have allowed enough time for the tasks, etc)

You should choose a strategy and process that could be used to better communicate information to employees on their work responsibilities.

What consultation method could be used for employees to provide feedback on their role?

Develop a process that could be used to quickly deal with the above issue raised; either through a method to resolve the issue or referring to an appropriate colleague.

Activity:  Developing surveys

Surveys are one way of gaining feedback from employees

  1. What are the positive and negative features of undertaking surveys? Consider the various methods that can be used.
  2. Using the above scenario, create a survey that could be used to consult with employees on the amount of tasks they receive and how they manage their workload in an average working week (use a free application such as surveymonkey.com to undertake this activity).

The survey should only be up to 10 questions and the language and style should be appropriate for the target group.  Questions should be relevant so as to elicit the required information.

What other means could be used to help information gathering to support the case for a workplace improvement?
