Assignment Description

Analyse a mediated account or review (audio with transcript, written journalistic or opinion piece) a topic concerning the institutional engagement(s) of a female or a definable female population (e.g. geographical, racial, issue oriented, age group).

 

It must be a feature length (approx. 1000 words), authored article or opinion piece of ‘mass media’ – defined as ‘all those institutions of society which make use of copying technologies to disseminate communications’ that ‘generate large quantities of products whose target groups are as yet undetermined’ (Luhmann, 1996: 2).

 

 

Good news sources are the NYT, WSJ, Washington Post, NPR, Financial Times, Int. Herald Tribune or similar. Please ask instructor about other options.

Pick a topic on women’s institutional engagement that is either:

  • covered in SOC 364 learning modules to extend case studies, or
  • not covered in depth within this class,such as women in the military, LGBT or transgender communities, religious groups, social networks, organised leisure/recreational activities or other areas.

 

Respond to Niklas Luhmnann’s key question in The Reality of the Mass Media. (1996) Trans. by Kathleen Cross. Stanford: Stanford University Press:

  • ‘how do mass media construct reality? Or, to pit it in a more complicated way (and related to one’s own self-reference!): how can we (as sociologists, for example) describe the reality of their construction of reality?
