One of you is Mr Yolker, a 73 year old man who has recently moved into residential aged care. Another one of you is the social worker his friends contact to report concerns that he has been forced into residential care against his will and that his son, Clark, is selling off his house against his wishes. The friends report that the aged care facility is not allowing them to visit Mr Yolker, under instructions from his son, who has told the facility that they are undesirable characters who frequently borrow money from Mr Yolker without paying it back.

 

The social worker visits Mr Yolker at the facility and he asserts that he did not want to leave home, but was convinced by Clark that he was here for ‘respite’, as a temporary measure. The social worker discovers that Mr Yolker has signed over an enduring power of attorney to his son, as he has told him frequently over the last couple of years that he is ‘losing his mind’ and is not capable of looking after his finances anymore. Mr Yolker tells the social worker that his friends have borrowed money from him in the past but have always paid it back, and says he would like them to be able to visit him.

 

The social worker and Mr Yolker meet with the facility manager, played by another person in the group, and explain that Mr Jeffries would like his friends to be able to visit. The social worker reminds the manager that it is Mr Yolker’s right to decide who visits him, and not his son’s. With assistance from the social worker, the facility manager organises an appointment with a psychogeriatrician, played by another team member, who tests Mr Yolker’s mental capacity and reports that he shows no signs of mental impairment.
