BISM1201 Part A: Business Process Modelling With BPMN
A business process model was created by a staff member at BISMoB bank, and it is believed to have many BPMN syntax errors (BPMN modelling errors).
As an experienced business analyst, you are asked to read the process model carefully and find the BPMN syntax errors. This document will be used to educate novice business analysts and future staff so they can improve their process modelling techniques.
What You Need To Do
- Find 10 errors on the process model (there are more than 15 designated errors in the model, but you only need to find 10).
- Write a brief report describing why each identified error is an incorrect practice of BPMN modelling guidelines or an incorrect BPMN construct. You must write your results in 10 numbered short paragraphs. Ensure that each numbered paragraph cross-references the error that you have found and marked in red font on the BPMN model.

TechGenie’s development of an information system: Waterfall or Scrum?
TechGenie is a small technology firm that specialises in the development of information systems. Generally, TechGenie develops very well defined and tried-and-tested information systems such as e-commerce systems, data capture and reporting systems and information-based mobile applications. That is, generally, the information systems that TechGenie develops are not very novel and can be accurately scoped and planned with foresight in the early stages. Because of this, TechGenie’s business analysts use a traditional Waterfall information systems development approach in all their information systems development projects. TechGenie has a range of large clients that it develops information systems for including banks, hospitals, universities, retailers, technology firms and manufacturers.
Recently, management at TechGenie has been approached by a bank (the client) to develop a “contact tracing mobile application”. (Contact tracing applications are used to monitor and trace COVID-19. A contact tracing mobile application can track whom each user has been in proximity to. There are a range of designs: some can alert affected users when one of them confirms positive for an infection, and some can even warn users when an infected person is nearby or monitoring if an infected user is following social-distancing guidelines2).
The client (a bank) wants the mobile application implemented so that they can monitor their employees and undertake contact tracing. The mobile application that the client envisions is different from other national-level contact tracing applications such as Australia’s COVIDSafe. The desired application is only to be used by employees on their work provided mobile device whilst they are on work premises. It is not for general public use.
The motivation for the development of the mobile application is that if one staff member becomes infected with COVID-19, then the client (the bank) can undergo its own rapid contact tracing and shut down departments or isolate teams of workers rather than close down all operations or work sites.
A challenge facing TechGenie is that contact tracing apps are novel, there is nothing really developed before that can be used for this purpose nor is there a large body of experience for TechGenie’s management, business analysts and developers to learn from.
Developing a fully operational solution will take time and might require rounds of adaptation and refinement. The client wants the mobile application to be ready to be

As a starting point, the client wants an application that can track employees when they enter a worksite (e.g. a building, or a floor of a building), as well as track who they have been in contact with if needed. Later functionality might include live reporting, health check features, monitor if an infected user is following social-distancing guidelines, and using the data as a way to redesign work.
Building an application in this way would also allow TechGenie to develop a product that they can quickly place on the market for other clients. At the same time, the client does not want to develop an application that is flawed, nor does TechGenie want to deliver a poor-quality solution.
You are a new business analyst working for TechGenie. You have been asked to plan the information systems development approach that you think will best fit the system development and meet the client’s needs.
The choice is either to continue using Waterfall which has served TechGenie well in the past or to adopt a more agile approach such as Scrum.
